Within territorial language, pioneers are those who advance into unknown areas, scout it out and secure it for the troops that follow them. In the history of art, avant-garde artists are described as pioneers, who have conquered new forms and concepts for the artists of generations to come. Since the 1960s, artists also have proven themselves to be pioneers in the field of urban development and often have been the forerunners of the social transformation processes of urban quarters.

Pioneers to the Falls reacts on the historico-cultural term “pioneer” as well as on the specific conditions of the Kunstfreilager. It is a city quarter in progress, and as a gigantic construction sit shifts its structures on a daily basis. At the moment it is hard to imagine how th
e premises will look, with an art university, apartment buildings and institutions. This time of transformation Jérémie Gindre, Aloïs Godinat, Markus Müller, Mandla Reuter and Valentina Stieger reflect through artistic works that are situated outside of the protection of the exhibition space, on territory that is yet to be defined. Thereby, the project’s title invokes the waterfall, as a romantic ideal and metaphor for adventure and danger, as well as for fugacity of ideals and visions. The works show the artists’ approaches to the current complex: With different positions and gestures they set alternative signs and spatial markings to determine the first chapter of the history of the Kunstfreilager to come.
